A Business in the Making
Back in 2017, owners Corey and Kari had just purchased their first home together and were excited at the challenge of fixing up it to make their own. Corey was a union carpenter working for companies like Mortensen, VJS, and Wellenstein and was building his career towards becoming a foreman. It seemed like the perfect scenario to chip away at the cosmetic problems the house faced. That is, until it wasn’t. Not even 6 months after buying the property, they had an electrical fire that could have killed them both had it not been for a failing smoke detector that was chirping “once in a while” in the middle of the night.
Following the fire, they discovered an unholy amount of live and faulty wiring hidden behind the drywall, plumbing that had been duct taped together, and a structural beam that was sagging by 2-3 inches that had been decoratively wrapped to hide it. Progressively as the season changed into spring, they suddenly had water pooling in multiple areas of the basement. It was a never-ending unveiling list of problems that were very clearly done by a homeowner who was not qualified to do any of it.
After an entire year of fighting with banks to get money to fix these issues and basically working 100+ hours/week between their full-time jobs and the work to fix the home, they looked at each other and said, “Let’s make sure this never happens to anyone else”.
Corey left the union and started his own residential remodeling company that operates with integrity and honesty. And that’s how Obsidian was founded.
Why the name Obsidian?
We often get asked this question, so here’s the skinny. Kari has spent her career in marketing and really wanted to hone in on the importance of doing things right. She spent a lot of time thinking of ways to represent the beauty of what they can offer clients, while simultaneously implying quality at the core of what they offer. She has always had an affinity for geology and so when she thought about the sleek look of Obsidian (a glass-like rock made from the pressure and heat of volcanic magma) it just made sense. Obsidian literally comes from the core of the earth and produces a magnificent product while we offer quality at the core of everything we do and we aim to deliver an exceptional end result.
Together, we are one dynamic powerhouse of brains and brawn who pride ourselves on making your next remodeling experience a great one.
